Clinical UX Consulting

Clinical UX consulting for complex healthcare problems.

I help healthcare organisations reduce clinical risk, improve workflows, support behaviour change and make better decisions about digital products, services and systems.

Where I can help

From a difficult question to a safer, clearer way forward.

Clinical UX sits where healthcare, design, behaviour, technology and organisational decisions meet.

The bigger picture

Healthcare is complicated. So are the problems within it.

The problem you can see may only be the tip of the iceberg.

Poor adoption, a difficult workflow, low engagement or a frustrating digital experience may be symptoms of deeper problems that have not yet been understood or addressed.

Healthcare is a sociotechnical system. People, technology, processes, organisations and clinical environments all depend on each other. Change one part, and you can create positive or negative effects somewhere else.

That is why my work starts by understanding what is really happening before deciding what needs to change.

Problems I help solve

Does any of this sound familiar?

You do not need to diagnose the problem before getting in touch. These are simply common starting points.

01

“We have a promising idea, but we are not sure what to build.”

Clarify the problem, the people affected, the evidence needed and what should happen next.

02

“It works in a demo, but not in real healthcare.”

Understand clinical workflows, environments, constraints and unintended consequences.

03

“People are not using it as we expected.”

Explore behaviour, motivation, friction, trust, access and the wider service around the product.

04

“We need to reduce risk before we scale.”

Find usability, workflow, behavioural, equity and clinical risks while they are still easier to change.

05

“We need stronger Clinical UX leadership and ways of working.”

Improve governance, decision-making, team capability and how Clinical UX evidence moves into delivery.

“Never have I met someone who lives and breathes their craft like Gyles. His passion and devotion to clinical UX has been clear to all for over a decade and he’s acknowledged as a pioneer and leader in this field.

Gyles's practice is founded on clinical evidence, design excellence and ultimately on deep empathy for all involved in receiving and providing healthcare.”

Ways we can work together

Flexible support, shaped around the problem.

These are common ways of working, not fixed packages. We can use one model or combine them as the work develops.

Ongoing / Fractional

Fractional Clinical UX leadership

Embedded strategic support when you need senior Clinical UX leadership without adding a full-time executive role.

  • Strategic de-risking and decision support
  • Clinical UX governance and ways of working
  • Team leadership, coaching and capability
  • Connecting product, clinical, design and technology
  • Supporting strategy from board level through delivery
Defined challenge

Targeted consulting projects

Focused work around a clear problem, decision, product, service or stage of delivery.

  • Research and strategic discovery
  • Clinical workflow mapping
  • Clinical heuristic evaluation
  • Behaviour change and health equity
  • Localisation, prototyping and service improvement
Build capability

Advisory & capability building

Help your people build stronger Clinical UX practice and make better decisions without depending on external support forever.

  • Leadership and specialist advisory
  • Team workshops and training
  • Mentoring for UX and product teams
  • Standards, processes and governance
  • Clinical UX maturity and ways of working
Not sure which model fits? That is normal. Start with the problem. We can decide the lightest useful form of support after we have spoken.
Scope & fees

Consulting is scoped around the problem, not sold as a fixed package.

Each challenge is different. Once I understand what is happening, I can recommend the lightest useful form of support and provide a clear scope and fee.

That may be a focused piece of work, a longer project, or ongoing fractional support.

01

Start with a conversation

Tell me what is happening, what you are trying to change and what feels uncertain.

02

Define the real problem

We clarify the people, workflows, risks, evidence, decisions and organisational context involved.

03

Choose the right way of working

I recommend a proportionate approach: project work, advisory support, capability building or a fractional relationship.

04

Agree a clear scope

You receive a clear view of the work, outcomes, level of involvement and fee before we begin.
